V for Vendetta Analysis

V for Vendetta

I would classify V for Vendetta as an Action Thriller film. The futuristic tale unfolds in Great Britain that's a fascist state. A freedom fighter known as V uses terrorist tactics to fight the oppressive society. The executions, revolution, the fight for freedom, and the word “Vendetta”, all of these things make me think that it’s an action thriller movie I didn’t have any high expectations from this movie as I thought that it will be a boring thriller movie which has a masked man killing his enemies, for freedom. However, the movie stood up a lot higher than my expectations, I loved it and now I think that V for Vendetta is an outstanding movie. Action thriller is my favourite genre, especially action.

Other than the genre, I quite like the story line and narrative. It starts in the not too distant future, where Britain is filled with torture cells, unfair punishments and prejudice against minorities. However in the mist of all this chaos, one man known only by the name V dares to stand up to the government and is labelled as a terrorist. One night V rescues a mild young woman called Evey Hammond and an unlikely bond between the two emerges which results with Evey becoming V’s ally. But though V may be charismatic and have a passion for justice he has his own personal hatred of the government for something they did to him long ago.  V’s love for Evey is shown when he imprisons Evey to make her experience the hunger for revenge. She screams at him and that’s when V shows her that he knows Valerie, and he explains to Evey that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The treatment against V, Valerie, and the populace will eventually come back strong and the system in power will be toppled. She then asks to leave and V lets her go. V is not happy with the fact that Evey does not want to remain by his side so he smashes a glass and begins to weep. My interpretation of this is that without love, he is left to destroy the government and his enemies so his life could gain meaning such as him being the liberator of the populace. As November the 5th, the day V says he and those who will follow him will stand up to the government once and for all approaches, Detective Finch becomes more and more determined to uncover the truth about V, however his search leads him to question himself, that whether or not he is on the right side.

The message behind V for Vendetta is the freedom from dictators and dictatorship.  It’s about a freedom fighter who uses terrorist tactics in pursuit of a personal vendetta, more precisely in a bid to raise voice against all unlawful oppressions and to entice people to take actions against such oppressions when it is required.
